Shadow Treasurer Jim Chalmers says there is a “two speed economy” in Australia which can be traced back to Prime Minister Scott Morrison’s “failures on vaccines and quarantine”.
“Those failures are putting the recovery at risk, there are some parts of the economy doing relatively well in second or third gear, some parts of the economy are in reverse because of those lockdowns which are made necessary by those failures,” he told Sky News.
Mr Chalmers said “the whole owes its gratitude” to people in the regions and those in COVID-19 hotspots who are “trying to do the right thing by each other” and not spread the virus.
He said the implementation of a “far inferior” version of JobKeeper and lockdowns in major cities will have a significant impact on the economy but the full extent of the damage is not yet known.
“That will be incredibly costly to the national economy, we don’t yet know just how costly but we do know there are costs and consequences and it all comes back to vaccines and quarantine and that really dumb decision to end JobKeeper early.”
