Building Strong Connections Among Students and Faculty

Building Strong Connections Among Students and Faculty

Whether lectures with 300 other students, small upper-division courses, or intimate faculty-hosted events on the Hill, students can greatly benefit, both professionally and academically, from developing strong relationships with professors throughout their undergraduate career. Panelists include: Faculty-in- Residence (FIR) Dr. Mike Hill and Dr. Miryung Kim, Director of the FIR program Dr. Lori Vogelgesang, and current student Abby Low, ’20.

Tips for connecting with faculty:
* Sit at the front of the classroom and make it your goal to ask at least one question a week — it demonstrates presence and is a sign of active learning
* Have a genuine interest to get to know the faculty and their work
* Do your homework — if interested in their work, prepare well in advance before meeting with the faculty by looking up their biographies and published work
* When speaking to faculty, know exactly what you need help with (e.g. assistance in understanding a process or concept)
* Familiarize yourself with appropriate email etiquette — be succinct and specific in your explanations/asks
* Remember that your professors are people too, whose academic/professional trajectories are informed by lived experiences and beliefs — they have capability to understand and emphasize with you.
