Former US President George W Bush has criticised the move to withdraw troops from Afghanistan as the country faces a Taliban takeover.
President Bush’s comments were a surprise, as he had kept a low profile since exiting office, and the convention previous presidents “don’t comment on the performance of their predecessors", according to Sky News contributor Michael Ware.
“President George W Bush was America’s leader on 9/11 and he’s the one who launched the war in Afghanistan straight after the attacks in New York and in DC,” he told Sky News.
“He would have a lot personally invested in this conflict and it’s obviously a defining part of his legacy.”
