I think this method is suitable for beginners to have some fun using inexpensive materials.
printer or copy paper

Vine or Willow charcoal
kneaded eraser (or a rubber eraser as long as you are careful to blow away the bits without smudging the charcoal)
cheap makeup sponge (optional)
stick of compressed charcoal (optional)
