Our Lifestyle Transformation
We started believing in the potential of lifestyle changes after we went through our transformation.
10+ years back, in our early 30s my husband was diagnosed with fatty liver, PreDiabetes, Hypertension, High LDL, Hyperuricemia and renal calculi (Severe Hematuria). He underwent Robotic surgery for his Renal calculi (kidney stone). He was also having issues with his joints and ligaments, he was not able to climb up stairs as it used to hurt. The condition started worsening by day, and he was not able to carry our daughter, then 1.5 years old and walk. All these physical states appearing such an early age for a person with a family history of heart disease put him under high stress. Few occasions his BP shot up and even got admitted in an ICU, sudden rise in BP was correlated with a heart ailment as he has a very strong family history and too bad lifestyle habits.
He is a teetotaler and his only indulgence was food, he was never ready to believe that food choices has huge impact on our health than any other genetic element.
While going through a bad patch of our life in our early 30s with multiple healthy issues with a toddler in hand, our relatives and family even suggested us to get out of the hectic life and settle down in our native place. And this happened to someone, who always dreamt of building an enterprise and becoming useful for the world. And that too happened at an early stage of our life, we haven’t even given a descent fight. There was pressure from our home front to stop the hectic lifestyle and settle back in Kerala
We both stood together…..we were not ready to give up. We took medical intervention for Renal calculi and a short term med treatment fro panic rise in BP or panic attack. The rest we decided to manage with lifestyle intervention. 10 years back, we didn’t have enough material to refer. Being from the medical background + Experience with clinical research on Lifestyle diseases helped me to dive deeper into the evidence based aspect of lifestyle interventions for reversing chronic lifestyle diseases.
We put together a plan for the next one year. Personally I was not sure my husband, a total foodie would be able to stick to the plan. But to my surprise, he started eating bowl of raw/steamed veggies at every meal. This also came with a price, he used to get irritated badly in the initial phase. Though he was not mentally happy to do the changes, his intention to go off medicine n prevent further damage to his body made him stick with it.
He was ready to go through the change from some one who preferred 80% or more animal products to a 95% Plant eater, most items in Whole form. The transformation was not easy. Once he started seeing the result he calmed down. From 110 kg with a waist circumference of 46-48”, he came down to 95 kg with dietary adaptation. He took up running once he touched 95 kg.
5-6 months down the lane, all lab parameters came down, his athletic endurance went up, allergies disappeared….No traces of fatty liver or enzyme abnormalities. He achieved 88 kg with list circumference of 36” in 8-10 months.
During this course of time, i too lost around 12 kg (Pregnancy weight) and got fit.
