AUKUS could be a ‘stepping stone’ to greater use of nuclear energy in Australia

Sky News guest host Daisy Cousens says she hopes the nuclear-powered submarines which will be acquired as part of the AUKUS alliance can be a “stepping stone” to greater use of nuclear energy in Australia.

“I know Scott Morrison has explicitly said no, this isn’t a big thing on nuclear energy, we’re certainly not going to get nuclear weapons, this is just a one-off thing,” she said.

“It’s very easy for him to say that now to kind of appease the nuclear alarmists, and again I understand why there's reticence about nuclear energy, we all remember what happened with Chernobyl, of course people are cautious about it.

“But in terms of it being renewable energy that is reliable, readily available, we have so much uranium in Australia, we are perfectly set up for it. It is absolutely the way of the future.”
