Hey guys, Lance here and today I'm going to talk about whether you can delay enrolling in Medicare Part B or not. But before I start, I do just want to say I know Medicare can be very complex and difficult to wrap your head around a lot of these concepts and things. Now, some people may get Medicare Part A premium free but most people have to pay a monthly premium for Medicare Part B because Medicare Part B comes with a monthly premium. Can You Delay Enrolling in Medicare Part B. Some people may choose not to sign up during their initial enrollment period, if they are currently covered under an employer group plan, either their own or through their spouse's employer.
But if you are still working, you should check with your Health Benefits Administrator to see how your insurance would work with Medicare. If you delay your enrollment in Medicare Part B, because you already have current employer health coverage, you can sign up later during a special enrollment period without having a late penalty. Can You Delay Enrolling in Medicare Part B. You can enroll in Medicare Part B at any time that you are still covered by a group plan based on your current employment. After your employer health coverage ends or your employment ends, whichever comes first. You have an eight month special enrollment period to sign up for part B without a penalty.
Now keep in mind that retiree coverage and Cobra are not considered health coverage based on current employment and would not qualify you for a special enrollment period. If you have Cobra after your employer coverage ends, you should not wait until your Cobra coverage ends to sign up for Medicare Part B. Your eight month Part B special enrollment period begins immediately after your current employment or group plan ends, whichever comes first. Can You Delay Enrolling in Medicare Part B. So this is regardless of whether you get Cobra so if you're getting ready to enroll in Medicare for the first time, or if you're already enrolled in Medicare, one of the most important things you can do is to review all of your options, as Medicare plans and benefits are changing and updating each year.
Now if you're enrolling for the first time, it can be very confusing trying to figure out which plan will be right for you. And if you're already enrolled, it's a good idea to review your coverage each year because you could be missing out on some important benefits offered by the major providers in your state. By reviewing your coverage, you may be able to upgrade your benefits without having to pay more money. But in either situation, this can be confusing to try and figure all these things out on your own.
