Our understanding of reality shapes our lives and our values. What is our understanding of reality? What is our awareness of our existence and what is it that we hold most dear? If our understanding of existence is our earthly life, and what we hold most dear are the material possessions of this world, the emotional experiences that we experience in this life, of joy, of worldly accomplishment, of relationships and friends, then we really have a limited scope, and in the end we will be among the losers. The actual reality is that all that there is in this life, both material and emotional, its joys, and pains, all of its experiences and accomplishments will come to an end and will turn into insignificant dust. Then, the everlasting life out of this world - the permanent life with no end will begin - either in gardens of bliss with our Creator, Allah (swt), or in everlasting torment of the hell fire. That is the true reality! This world and everything in it is insignificant in itself, and the only true value in it is that it is connected to the next life in a very very significant way: If the earthly lives that we lead are on the path of our Creator, and the only path is Islam, then this short test, 70 years, more or less, will earn by the blessings of Allah an everlasting life of bliss in paradise. The converse is, if this earthly life was lived just for its own sake, for its joys and aspirations, without taking account of the guidance of our Creator, then it will lead to ultimate loss and torment: the hell fire. This is the real reality that we should be aware of, and the reality that shapes our thinking and actions.
