There’s been a lot of contention surrounding Bears head coach Matt Nagy’s usage of rookie quarterback Justin Fields. Fields made his Bears debut to the tune of five plays during a loss to the Rams in Week 1, where he completed both of his passes and scored a rushing touchdown.
It was clear what Fields brings to this offense, but he remains relegated to the backup while Andy Dalton serves as the starting quarterback.
When Nagy met with the media on Thursday, he discussed how Fields “provides a lot of value” as a chess piece in the Bears’ game plan.
And while that might work for Taysom Hill and the Saints, Fields is the future of the Bears franchise. While Nagy might not understand chess, you don’t use your queen as a pawn.
As you can imagine, Bears fans were not pleased by Nagy’s chess piece remark. After all, Chicago traded up to land Fields with the 11th overall pick. He’s someone who could — and should — be starting right now, but he’s been relegated to a gadget player while Dalton, who is not the future of this team, has hold of the reins.
