why did they think this play would work

During the college football game between Coastal Carolina and Arkansas State, Arkansas State attempted a bizarre two point conversion early in the fourth quarter. After cutting the Chanticleers lead to 38-20, Arkansas State decided to go for two to cut the lead to 16. The Redwolves came out in a bizarre formation with 5 receivers bunched up out wide and then the center with nobody next to him. As a result of the bizarre formation, two Coastal Carolina players came in unblocked and forced the Arkansas State QB to quickly throw the ball, resulting in an incompletion and failed two point conversion. The announcers were speechless following the play. Coastal Carolina went on to defeat Arkansas State 52-20 in a blowout.
