Eastpointe, Michigan — A man stopped by Eastpointe Police for reckless driving on Gratiot Avenue just north of Eight Mile Road pointed a gun at police and fled the scene on foot, officers reported. 28-year-old Deaz Fitzgerald Titus Jr. was driving an all terrain vehicle on June 15, 2022 when police pulled him over and approached him when they noticed what appeared to be a firearm in his shorts. When officers attempted to restrain him, Titus pulled away and attempted to escape. As one officer deployed his taser, Titus lost his balance, fell to the ground, and began to roll over. Police said Titus pulled out his gun and pointed it at the officers.
The second police officer deployed his stun gun, but it didn't have any effect. The two officers then took cover. Because there was heavy vehicle and pedestrian traffic, they did not fire their weapons, officials said. Titus got up off the ground and fled on foot into a residential area. Police set up a perimeter and a Detroit Police K-9 unit was called. The police dog led them to where a man was hiding in a garage. Officers arrested Titus without incident. They also recovered an illegal firearm where the subject and officers first encountered each other.
Titus was arraigned June 16 in 38th District Court in Eastpointe. He is charged with assault on a police officer, assault with a dangerous weapon, breaking & entering, felon in possession of a firearm, felon in possession of ammunition, and carrying a concealed weapon. He is in the Macomb County Jail for now being held on $1 million bond. According to the Michigan Department of Corrections, Titus was released from prison in 2019 after serving nearly three years after pleading guilty to weapons charges stemming from an incident in 2014.
