Jewellers in Ahmedabad, Gujarat shut down their shops Monday in order to protest against the process to provide hallmarking unique ID (HUID) for every piece of jewellery. The jewellers are upset that no relief has been offered in writing by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) or Ministry of Corporate Affairs on the HUID issue. The BIS had made gold hallmarking mandatory from mid-June.
