A fortnight after BBC1 launches the country's first national breakfast television service, ITV launches a rival service which was awarded a breakfast franchise by the IBA in December 1980 called TV-am. Whilst TV-am hit the airwaves, Channel 4 screened a good luck caption and played their normal trade test music over this caption between 0600 and 0915 instead of their ETP-1 testcard which returned later that morning.
