"正座 SEIZA" Was NOT Done By Samurai Warlords?! Why Bother to Make Your Legs Numb? #Shorts

Sitting seiza-style is a common practice in all traditional Japanese culture, but this tradition only started from the Edo period (1603~1868). Until then for most of Japanese history, people generally sat with their legs crossed (or kneeling in the case of samurai).

You might have noticed that in the pictures of famous samurai, they are all sitting with their legs crossed and never folded. Seiza was originally not favored by samurai because it caused numbness in the legs and made it difficult to get up quickly and fight in emergencies.

The several reasons why seiza came to be recognized as the most formal way of sitting from the peaceful Edo period are...

1. Seiza became a proper way to show that there was no hostility
when seeing superiors (because you can’t suddenly stand up to attack)
2. The gradual spread of tatami mats (straw floors) from wooden floors made it possible to sit in seiza-style longer
3. After Westernization, seiza became more popular to differentiate the culture from other countries

So if you can’t sit with your legs folded just tell them, “I’m just sitting like the way the ancient samurai warriors sat!”
